Research Interests

The nucleation and crystallisation of novel glasses and leucite glass-ceramics for Dentistry and processing techniques to enhance their mechanical properties are Dr Cattell's main research areas. Work has been carried out to develop new leucite glass-ceramics as low wear/high strength materials for all ceramic dental restorations, with heat extrusion as a method of restoration manufacture. Etchable glaze coatings for dental prostheses to improve mechanical properties have similarly been explored. Other areas of work are the mechanical testing of ceramic materials and the application of Statistical analyses (Weibull and Gaussian) to describe the distribution of flaws in brittle materials and the material survivability. Fatigue and fracture testing of all ceramic dental restorations in a simulated oral environment has also been investigated.

His initial research on leucite glass-ceramics led to a patent and the commercialisation of a leucite glass-ceramic and an etchable glaze material, as Restorative Dental materials. The leucite glass-ceramic product was clinically rated excellent by the 'Dental Advisor' and also by the Clinical Research Associates (CRA), who evaluate products for the dental profession. The Leucite glass-ceramic (Lumineers®) was also awarded top cosmetic product by the 'Dental Advisor' (2008). In 2008/2009 he has published two patents for higher strength (nano-scale) and low wear leucite glass-ceramics in conjunction with industry which should be shortly on the market. Dr Cattell is presently working on glass-ceramics with unique microstructures and mechanical properties which have never been demonstrated in this category of materials. This work is in collaboration with Professor Robert Hill, a world leader in this field and member of the prestigious Technical Committee (IGC, TC7) on Nucleation, Crystallisation and Glass-Ceramics.
